Nestled in the heart of the Municipality of Ourém, Agroal Nature Park is a captivating natural haven that combines biodiversity, wellness, sustainability and accessibility. As part of the Natura 2000 Network, this ecological sanctuary stands out for its rich flora and fauna, crystal-clear thermal waters and visitor-friendly facilities.
Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, hiker or traveler looking to unwind in pristine surroundings, Agroal offers a unique blend of leisure, learning and environmental preservation. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your perfect visit.
1. Protected by the Natura 2000 Network
The Agroal Nature Park (ANP) is part of the PTCON0045 Sicó/Alvaiázere Site of Community Importance within the Natura 2000 Network — a European ecological network that protects vital habitats and promotes biodiversity across the EU.
2. Location & Accessibility
Located in the parish union of Freixianda, Ribeira do Fárrio and Formigais, the park lies adjacent to the Nabão River. It’s easily accessible via paved roads, with clearly marked parking available for around 50 vehicles.
3. Environmental Awareness and Education
The Agroal Nature Park plays a crucial role in promoting nature conservation. Through its Environmental Interpretation Center, visitors are introduced to the geology, flora and fauna of the region. The center features:
- A permanent exhibition on local biodiversity;
- A multipurpose room for activities;
- A dedicated exhibition room.

4. Outdoor Leisure Facilities
In addition to its educational features, the park offers superb leisure, perfect for family outings, group excursions or solo retreats:
- An interpretative garden with native vegetation;
- A picnic and grill area;
- Camping zones, bathrooms, dishwashing stations, and wash tanks.
5. Clear Booking Guidelines
Use of the park and its outdoor equipment must be requested at least 10 days in advance via email: parque.agroal@mail.cm-ourem.pt. Usage requires agreement with the park’s official regulations (approved June 4, 2018).
6. Nearby Attraction: Agroal River Beach
Just steps from the park lies the Agroal River Beach, home to the largest spring of the Nabão River. This natural spring flows from Middle Jurassic limestone with a discharge of around 1,000 liters/second and maintains a cool average temperature of 16°C.
A natural swimming pool was built to allow visitors to enjoy the area’s refreshing, mineral-rich waters, traditionally believed to have thermal properties.
7. Top Water Quality Ratings
Since 2015, the river waters have consistently earned an “Excellent” classification for swimming, thanks to frequent monitoring by the Portuguese Environment Agency and the Municipality of Ourém.
8. Full Accessibility for All Visitors
Since 2016, Agroal has held the “Accessible Beach” flag, recognizing it as a safe and inclusive environment for all visitors, including those with limited mobility. Key accessibility features include:
- Step-free pedestrian access;
